What is Adventures In Training, Inc (AIT)?

AIT is a corporation dedicated to promoting adventure-based (experiential) practice. It is owned and operated by Tony Alvarez and Gary Stauffer who have broad experience in the use of experience-based interventions in a variety of settings. Our programs strive to provide experiences that create rich learning opportunities, build strong work communities, and enhance the use of experiential approaches that encourage growth, change and transformation.

Typical programs provided:
  • One-day training workshops are offered on various topics. These may include, but are not limited to team building, diversity awareness, conflict resolution, community collaboration and more.
  • Staff development and team building workshops are offered on location at the work site. The goal is to enhance the effectiveness of the working team by improving the sense of belonging and connection, communication, safety, trust, and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced Facilitator Training is traditionally held in early spring. It is an advanced training for practitioners wishing to refresh their practice and enhance their effectiveness using adventure.
  • Four-day Facilitator Training is an annual “summer training” during the second week of July. This training provides a foundation for effective adventure-based practice, presents basic theory, and offers an opportunity to be a part of an adventure group, as well as the option for participants to co-lead activities and receive feedback on their facilitation style.
  • Agency-specific training and consultation. AIT has enjoyed training social work staff at several Michigan School Districts including Jackson Public, Troy Public, and Dearborn Public Schools. We have also led training sessions for the Muskegon Intermediate School District and Muskegon Family Service Agency. In each case, the training content was tailored to meet the specific needs of the agency.
  • Program and staff consultation. Working with individual staff or entire organizational systems to infuse adventure practices into the continuum of services is one of our most gratifying tasks. Formulating adventure-based intervention plans, supporting adventure therapy program staff, evaluating the current effectiveness of programs, and designing a package of adventure tools to meet your agency needs are just a few of the ways AIT consultation can be useful to your agency.
